Storytelling and Social Change: Using Disability Positive Communication to Spark the Collective Imagination

Storytelling has long helped drive positive social change. This training will provide a brief look at the science of storytelling, highlighting why and how stories have such a powerful impact on our minds and hearts. The remainder of the session will focus on understanding the Four O’s of storytelling: Opportunity, Observation, Option, and Ownership. Participants will gain deeper knowledge on how to use the Four O’s in their work, and the importance of employing Disability Positive Communication strategically in the stories they tell. Ultimately, participants will leave with an awareness on how stories might aid them in turning their vision of a more inclusive future into a reality.

About Bachmeyer Press

Bachmeyer Press is a storytelling studio that supports organizations working to interrupt harmful cultural narratives by telling stories that celebrate change. Our work is equity-focused. Therefore, everything we do is done in collaboration with the people whose stories we tell. We do this through a participatory model that draws from our founder’s roots in anthropology and disability inclusion advocacy, where there is “nothing about us without us.” Including the story subject and client in telling their own story aligns our purpose: to tell stories that celebrate change, with our value of approaching every story with our eyes, ears, and heart open so that the real story can emerge.

Since 2020, Bachmeyer Press company has been telling stories for clients who serve the public in inclusive and imaginative ways such as Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services, Shared Support Maryland, Cincinnati Public School District, University of Cincinnati, Community Initiatives Network, Starfire, The Beloved Community of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio, Unconscious Bias Project, Community Initiatives, Butler County Family and Children First Council, and Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health. The results of these collaborations include feature story articles, short docu films, story driven websites, and social media content writing that elevate the mission and values of each organization.
