Historical Shapes of Social Devaluation and How They Impact Our Present Day World

The patterns of our culture that surround and shape how we think about and act toward disability have been shaped by our past in powerful ways. This session takes a look into our shared historical experiences, both in societal and personal ways, and how those experiences shape our present experience. Learners will also explore ways to resist and counteract the harmful historical narratives and mindsets to begin shifting toward a more inclusive future by focusing on strengths-based identities for people with disabilities.

Starfire is a groundbreaking organization empowering leaders to build community and inclusion alongside people with developmental disabilities. We do this by increasing social connectivity through meaningful relationships and by working to remove barriers to opportunities in the community where people can be known for their gifts, not their disabilities.
